The Chochlakies gorge is located near the village of Chochlakies and its exit is at Karoumes beach. The route is 3,3km long (one way) and has water most of the winter. The route, which is part of the European footpath E4, usually takes 1:30 hours (one way). The gorge is characterized by its steep cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and narrow passages, creating a sense of adventure for hikers. Its crossing is particularly charming due to the richness of a variety of plant species, including endemic herbs and flowers that thrive in its microclimate. Olive and carob trees are common, and during spring, the gorge is particularly vibrant with wildflowers. At the conclusion of the trail awaits the pristine and azure beach of Karoumes, untouched by human intervention. This secluded beach is known for its crystal-clear waters, pebbly shore, and tranquil atmosphere, providing a perfect spot to relax and swim after the hike. The remoteness of Karoumes Beach ensures that it remains uncrowded, offering a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature. Walking through the Chochlakies Gorge is a rewarding experience that combines natural beauty, a moderate hiking challenge, and the serenity of a secluded beach. Summer hikes are possible but can be very hot; start early in the morning to avoid the heat.<h3> What to Bring</h3> Before embarking on the gorge crossing, it is advisable to ensure you have an ample supply of water and snacks. Make sure you bring along only essential items to avoid carrying excessive weight along the way.&nbsp;       •     Water: At least 1.5 to 2 liters per person.       •     Snacks: Energy bars, fruits, and other light snacks.       •     Sun Protection: Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.       •     Sturdy Footwear: Hiking boots or strong walking shoes.       •     First Aid Kit: Basic supplies in case of minor injuries.       •     Swimwear and Towel: For a refreshing dip at Karoumes Beach.       •     Camera: To capture the scenic beauty.       •     Map or GPS: Although the trail is marked, it’s helpful to have a map or GPS device.<h3> Getting There</h3> Drive to Chochlakies Village. The village is located approximately 20 km east of Sitia. You can rent a car or take a local bus to reach the village. There is parking available near the trailhead.<h3> The Hike</h3> Starting Point Start at the parking lot <a data-mce-href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/7a1A7sjyKSSCZXQS9" href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/7a1A7sjyKSSCZXQS9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.&nbsp; You can park your car here. At the end of the olive woodland, you pass a fence. Don’t forget to close the fence behind you. The path gradually becoming more rugged and rocky. Follow the streambed, which may be dry in the summer months. Along the way, you’ll see various rock formations, small caves, and ancient terraces. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as birds of prey and lizards. Some parts of the trail may require scrambling over rocks, so proceed with caution.<h3> Arrival at Karoumes Beach</h3> Reaching the Beach After approximately 1:30 hours of hiking, you will arrive at the beautiful and secluded Karoumes Beach.Heading Back When you’re ready, retrace your steps back through the gorge to the village of Chochlakies.
