Hidden between the impressive Kouroupa and Xiron mountains in southern Crete, the Kourtaliotiko Gorge is a stunning natural wonder. This 2.5-kilometer-long canyon amazes you with its steep cliffs, some reaching up to 600 meters high, and the sound of flowing water echoing through its depths.

The gorge gets its name from the distinctive clapping sounds—called “kourtala” by locals—that occur when strong winds rush through its narrow passages, creating a natural melody. As you walk along the well-kept trails, the fresh scent of wild herbs fills the air, while the sight of rare plants and animals, including the majestic Lammergeier vulture, makes the experience even more special.

A highlight for many is the Kourtaliotiko Waterfall, a stunning 40-meter cascade located near the chapel of Agios Nikolaos. According to local legend, the springs feeding the waterfall were miraculously created when Saint Nicholas struck the rocks with his staff, causing water to gush forth.

Sadly in the last years it became one of the instagram hotspots of the island. The place which was ones heavenly, is now overcrowded by people, trash is left behind and people are swimming in the drinking water of the nearby villages. So, it was time to undertake action.

In response to concerns about environmental preservation and visitor safety, local authorities have recently implemented new regulations for those wishing to explore the Kourtaliotiko Gorge.

This year, access to the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, in southern Rethymno, will be by ticket, since the goal is to protect the natural landscape, of particular natural beauty, but also the visitors themselves, from landslides that are not rare.

A comprehensive study determined that the gorge can sustainably accommodate up to 100 visitors per hour, leading to a daily cap of 1,000 visitors. To manage this, an electronic ticketing system has been introduced, allowing visitors to book specific time slots in advance. Revenue from ticket sales is allocated with 70% directed to the municipality of Agios Vasilios and 30% to the Organization for the Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA). These funds are earmarked for essential services, including the installation of safety measures, establishment of first aid stations, regular maintenance and cleaning, and the development of additional trails to enhance the visitor experience.

For those planning a visit, it’s advisable to secure tickets ahead of time, wear appropriate footwear for the sometimes rugged terrain, and carry essentials like water and sun protection. By adhering to these guidelines and respecting the natural environment, you can ensure that the Kourtaliotiko Gorge remains a pristine sanctuary for generations to come.
