Mochlos is a small picturesque fishing village located In the gulf of Mirabello in Eastern Crete, easily within reach of Agios Nikolaos, Ierapetra and Sitia.

There is not much to do in this village, but that is precisely why people come to Mochlos. You can relax in one of the taverns along the water or take a sunbath on the only sandy beach. Some people also come for the uninhabited island off the coast with the same name. On this island, mainly American archaeologists are excavating an important Minoan settlement. The small chapel situated on the right of the site is dedicated to St Nicolas who protects the seamen.

Mochlos has a population of just over 100, with a significant number of foreigners who came and never left. Life in the village mainly takes place around the central square and on the waterfront. You can reach the small sandy beach via a quiet road that is also often used as a second terrace for the taverns on the waterfront.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Mochlos Beach is during the warm and sunny months of late spring, summer and early autumn. The region’s Mediterranean climate ensures pleasant weather during these periods, making it ideal for beach activities and exploring the surrounding natural beauty. Late spring (May to June) offers milder temperatures, fewer crowds and lush landscapes, making it an excellent time for hiking and sightseeing. Summer (July to August) brings the peak tourist season, with warmer temperatures perfect for swimming and water activities. However, it can get crowded during this time, so early mornings and late afternoons might be more peaceful. Early autumn (September to October) still enjoys pleasant weather and the sea remains warm, making it another great time for beachgoers and outdoor enthusiasts. To avoid extreme heat and crowds, late spring and early autumn are generally considered the best times to visit Mochlos.

How to get to Mochlos

To reach the picturesque village of Mochlos in Crete, there are several transportation options available:

1. **By Car**: If you're traveling from major cities like Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos, renting a car offers flexibility and convenience. Take the national road (E75) to Agios Nikolaos and then follow the signs to Sitia.
From Sitia, continue along the coastal road (EO90) towards Mochlos. The journey takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

2. **By Bus**: Mochlos is accessible by public bus from major cities like Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos. Buses operated by KTEL Crete run regularly to Sitia, with stops in Mochlos along the way. The bus journey from Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos to Mochlos takes around 2 to 3 hours, depending on the route and schedule.

3. **By Taxi**: Taxis are available for hire from nearby towns and cities like Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. While more expensive than other options, taxis offer a convenient and direct way to reach Mochlos.
